Mobile Stroke Unit: The Ultimate Comprehensive Stroke Care Ambulance
Developing countries account for 75.2% (about 5 million/year) of all stroke-related deaths and 81.0% (more than 90 million/year) of the associated disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost. In addition, given that 60% of the world’s population resides in Asia (mostly living in developing countries), accessibility to acute stroke therapies is a growing concern in this region.
The Siriraj Mobile Stroke Unit is a cutting-edge ambulance developed by the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. It is equipped with a portable CT scanner, a state-of-the-art 5G teleconsultation system, and life-saving stroke medications. This enables the first responders to consult with doctors at the hospital and provide treatment on-site. Reducing treatment time and providing faster access to clot-busting medication significantly improves the chances of recovery.
Since its launch in Thailand on 18th May 2018, this remarkable mobile stroke unit has saved the lives of over 1,900 acute stroke patients and significantly reduced mortality and disability rates. It achieved an impressive full recovery rate of over 60% within 90 days, compared with just a 40% chance of full recovery for those who received initial treatment in the hospital. The mortality rate is also reduced to 5%.
Currently, there are seven such ambulances deployed across underserved areas throughout the kingdom, bringing critical care to those in need. Thailand also operates the largest fleet of MSUs in the world.
Thus, A/Prof Yongchai Nilanont, A/Prof Pornchai Chanyagorn and their team were recognised as the World Champion, the most prestigious award of the WorldInventTM Singapore 22+23, for their remarkable invention.
